ALEISTER CROWLEY

Crowley

'Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law'

Aleister Crowley (Edward Alexander Crowley) was born 12 October in the same year as the foundation of the Theosophical Society (1875), at Leamington Spa at 11.30pm. Contrary to popular legend, he died on the 1st December 1947. The 'Myth of the Magus' has grown to prodigious proportions in the half century or more since the old man's death. Crowley is now firmly established in the popular mind as a folk hero (or anti hero?), transmogrified to an icon on a spectrum somewhere between 'the sandman' (Clive Barker version) and 'the gringe'.

Written for The English Review in 1913, this essay says more about Crowley than about American Art. It was much criticized by contemporary American artists for its prejudice and unfairness. Crowley says in his Confessions that he planned other, more positive essays dealing with the present and future of American Art. The essay's lasting value is historical - how differently things have come to look in the intervening seventy years.

The Magick of Thelema
Lon Milo DuQuette (Weiser) £ 13.99 A handbook of the rituals of Aleister Crowley. According to blurb, has a 'user friendly guide' to all of Crowley's major rituals. Includes an introduction to Thelema, Liber AL, Liber Samech, Gnostic Mass, daily rituals - the whole lot. Each ritual has an introduction and useful commentary and notes, to guide one through the more obscure bits. Why hasn't someone done this before? The author is a well known thelemic writer, very much in the more orthodox 'Caliphate' school and therefore likely to be a bit phallo-centric. This minor reservation aside, an excellent addition to the library of the working magician.

The Mark of the Beast Belt buckle £ 14.99 surrounded by the names of god (masculine and feminine, from the circle of Magick) A stylized erect phallus is encircled by the seven rayed star of Babalon--Reiterating the theme of male and female combined: Shiva/Shakti, Sun/Moon etc. The number of this glyph is given a 666. Mystics such as Robert Graves, H P Blavatsky and Aleister Crowley, have know since its very appearance that it is a kabbalistic cypher, concealing the mysteries of the solar current. Around the edge of the talisman are shown the major god names of the new aeon This design appears for the first time in this form, made into a solid brass belt buckle of highest quality. The magical important of buckles is perhaps lost in the present era but was well known to our Celtic forebears. By wearing the belt, the Mark of the Beast protects and projects from the wearer's magical centre, sometimes known as the manipura chakra. This is the fulcrum of the body and its magick.
